Newport Middle School needed to replace an outdated mural to represent the merging of all k-12 schools to a unified mascot: Newport Cubs. To represent the town and its motif of a costal life, the Yaquina Bay Bridge with large waves enveloping the NMS Logo was landed on. The Yaquina bay bridge is a staple architecture of Newport and was apart of the old mural.

The waves are reminiscent of “The Great Wave off Kanagawa “, why? Well this costal town received a few memories from the Tsunami that hit Japan back in 2011. Both waves reflect each other not just for symmetry but to reflect how connected the ocean makes us to our far off neighbors.

This was the image I created on Procreate with my iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. Helping me get the symmetry and architecture shapes more efficiently. This also made it easier to connect with the projector since it has screen mirroring capabilities via Bluetooth, no hassle about compatibility between interfaces.

Digital Start

Transfer Phase

I used my handy projector to get the right dimensions. Once I was all set up, I outlined all the shapes and images with a 2B pencil so I could see any line made. Double checking every shape, Its ready for paint.
